SOUTH TYNESIDE, England — An off-duty firefighter based in South Tyneside saved a woman’s life after she became trapped in a “ferocious” blaze.
Andy Lane, 37, a watch manager at South Shields community fire station in John Reid Road, rescued the woman near his home in Gateshead. Firefighter Lane smelled smoke as he was going to his car and noticed a glow in one of his neighbor’s windows.
He told a neighbor to dial 911, and smashed a window after he heard the woman screaming, before another resident arrived with a key to the back door. Firefighter Lane crawled through the home to find the woman and pulled her to safety, as crews from Swalwell community fire station and one from Gateshead community fire station, attended the incident.
