SF firefighters: City’s congestion is impacting response times

Since October, the city has seen more lanes converted for bicycle and bus traffic along with more corner “bulb-outs,” designed to keep cars from clipping pedestrians

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — KTVU first reported in October on the tensions between San Francisco emergency responders and city officials working to make the streets more pedestrian and bicycle friendly. On Thursday, San Francisco firefighters told KTVU getting to the scene of an emergency is getting more difficult each day.

Since October, the city has seen more lanes converted for bicycle and bus traffic along with more corner “bulb-outs,” designed to keep cars from clipping pedestrians. Almost a thousand San Francisco pedestrians were struck by cars last year.

“These changes are about making our roads safer,” said San Francisco Supervisor Scott Wiener, “whether it’s for safer bike lanes, or safer crossings for pedestrians.” San Francisco Fire Department officials are more ambivalent.
