MERIDEN, Conn. — Police are investigating the death of a woman following a fall from a Willow Street apartment building Saturday evening in an apparent suicide.
Crews responded to Community Towers, 55 Willow St., shortly after 5 p.m. on reports that a woman had fallen from the building and landed on an awning.
Firefighters used a ladder to reach the woman while residents of the apartment building watched from the street and balconies above. The woman was taken to the hospital by Hunters Ambulance but later died of her injuries, according to Assistant Fire Chief Robert Burdick.
Police Sgt. Stanley Zajac said police were investigating, but it appeared the woman jumped from the building. Witnesses said they heard a loud thud and thought it was a gunshot before later determining that it was the woman’s body hitting the awning.
Community Towers is a 221unit public housing complex for elderly residents and is operated by the Meriden Housing Authority
