RUSSELL, Kan. — A $5,000 grant from a northwest Kansas foundation will help Russell firefighters reduce exposure to job-related health hazards.

The Dane G. Hansen Foundation awarded the Russell Fire Department a grant to purchase a fit testing machine, ensuring all firefighters have properly fitting SCBA facepieces, KSNW reported.

Firefighters face constant exposure to hazardous materials, including cancer-causing carcinogens. Even a small leak can allow dangerous particles to enter their bodies.

Proper equipment reduces firefighters’ cancer risk. Fit machines detect leaks, ensuring safety. Russell Fire Department says the machine will help new recruits and speed up annual testing.
