LAKE DELTON, Wis. — Eighty-one hockey players and spectators received treatment for exposure to carbon monoxide at the Lake Delton indoor ice rink.
A Delton (Wis.) Fire Department press release reported that after a minor league hockey game Saturday evening players reported having headaches, feeling dizzy, several had vomited, and one had fainted. Dells/Delton EMS service paramedics, called to the location, immediately recognized the possibility of CO poisoning. The Delton Fire Department recorded high readings of CO from inside the building.
Many hockey players, staff, and spectators left the ice rink prior to the discovery of the CO leak. Fire, EMS, and law enforcement were dispatched to various locations in Lake Delton and Wisconsin Dells area to make contact with those known to have been at the ice rink during the hockey game. People experiencing flu-like symptoms were either transported via ambulance or went to the hospital on their own.
Multiple EMS, fire, and law enforcement agencies were involved with this incident. Agencies involved included Dells/Delton EMS, Delton Fire, Lake Delton Police, Kilbourn Fire, Wisconsin Dells Police, Baraboo EMS, Reedsburg EMS, Divine Savior EMS, Mauston EMS, Lodi EMS, and North Freedom First Responders. Patients were treated at St. Clare Hospital, Reedsburg Area Medical Center, Divine Savior Hospital, and Mile Bluff Medical Center.
The cause of CO leak has not been determined and the incident remains under investigation by local police.
