GLASGOW, Scotland — Firefighters in Scotland can now communicate directly with their control rooms and other emergency services with the most advanced communication system in the UK.
Community Services Minister Fergus Ewing made the announcement yesterday which sees the analogue radios firefighters previously used being replaced with state-of-the-art digital ones.
While it is also being rolled out south of the border, Scotland s eight fire brigades are the first in the Britain to begin using it.
Firelink which is being funded with £38 million from the Scottish Government allows firecrews to communicate directly with their control rooms, as well as with fellow fire- fighters across the UK and police.
It is now up and running in more than 1,100 fire service vehicles and 368 fire stations.
The terrorist attacks in New York on September 11, 2001, and in London on July 7, 2005, led to the decision to introduce a single, reliable communications system that linked all the emergency services.
