Firefighters had to use heavy machinery to remove the truck’s roof to get to the driver, who later died at a hospital

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — A garbage hauling truck with its lifting arms raised has struck a Connecticut highway overpass and flipped over, killing the driver.

Police in Fairfield say the driver unloaded a garbage container at a McDonald’s restaurant and drove onto Interstate 95 northbound with the truck’s arms still elevated Thursday morning.

Authorities say the arms struck an overpass near an exit and the truck flipped on its side and hit a guardrail.

Firefighters had to use heavy machinery to remove the truck’s roof to get to the driver, who later died at a hospital in nearby Bridgeport.

Fairfield and state police are investigating the accident. State Department of Transportation officials are assessing damage to the overpass.
