HAZLETON, Pa. — Two local fire companies have received grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for operations and safety.

Valley Regional Fire and Rescue received $228,637 and Nesquehoning Hose Company No. 1 received $237,500.

Valley Regional Assistant Chief Marty James said the fire company plans to buy new air packs and hose to outfit two fire engines and the rescue truck. The company will contribute a $12,000 match as part of the grant, he said.

Nesquehoning Fire Chief John McArdle said the company will be purchasing an urban interface vehicle, or an all-wheel-drive mini-pumper truck that will be used as a brush truck and in tight spaces in town, such as a cul de sac, where a larger truck might not fit. The vehicle will replace two forestry units — a Jeep pickup and a tanker, he said.

U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., who announced the grants, said the money “will help provide ... firefighters with the resources they need to ensure their safety and the safety of those they serve.”
