HERCULES, Calif. — An alleged drunk driver was arrested early Monday after he crashed into the back of a fire truck parked at the scene of a freeway crash near Hercules, authorities said.

The incident happened as Rodeo-Hercules firefighters and California Highway Patrol officers were on the scene of a crash on eastbound Interstate 80 east of Willow Avenue about 1:55 a.m.

The two right lanes of the freeway were closed, and a fire truck was parked in one of the slow lanes.

As rescue personnel investigated the crash, Christian Zuniga, 29, of Richmond was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol while behind the wheel of a 2013 Ford Taurus, authorities said.

He failed to see the fire truck and crashed into the back of the rig, CHP officials said. A firefighter sitting in the driver’s seat of the fire truck, Jerry Short Jr., 35, suffered minor injuries.

Zuniga was conscious but unresponsive after the crash, authorities said. He was later arrested for DUI, the CHP said.
