NY firefighter calls mayday at house fire; critically hurt

The firefighter was in cardiac arrest, but his colleagues were able to revive him

NASSAU COUNTY, N.Y. — A firefighter was hospitalized after falling through a compromised floor while battling a fire Friday morning.

7online reported that the fire broke out in the basement of an empty home just before 4 a.m. The firefighter, who was one of the first on scene after the initial 911 call, apparently fell through the first floor and into the basement after entering the building.

It is unclear if other firefighters knew he was inside, because he was found accidentally by other firefighters making their way through the house.

The firefighter was in cardiac arrest, but his colleagues were able to revive him, according to the report.

He was transported to the hospital for treatment and is listed in critical but stable condition.

A total of 13 area departments and 200 firefighters helped battle the fire.

Two other firefighters suffered minor injuries.

The residents were not home at the time, and the fire is not believed to be suspicious. The cause is under investigation.
