NFFF Sponsors 2nd Annual FDIC 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb on Friday, April 20

Every step taken during the Second Annual FDIC 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb on Friday, April 20 honors the 343 FDNY firefighters who died more than 10-years-ago. And it directly and positively impacts the well-being of their survivors and fellow firefighters. The inaugural 2011 stair climb at FDIC set the stage for a fundraising effort that helped the FDNY hold onto key programs of its Counseling Services Unit that were threatened by budget cuts.

When talking about the impact of this effort, FDNY Commissioner Salvatore Cassano recently said, “This money will help ensure that the members of FDNY and their families will continue to receive the outstanding support and counseling they need as they navigate through challenging times.”

Registration is limited, but still available for this important event sponsored by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Proceeds from the $25 fee will again be directed to the FDNY Counseling Services Unit.

Check-in will begin at 11:30 a.m. at booth 9244 and the climb will begin at 1:00 p.m. Participants will climb the stadium stairwells multiple times for a total of 110 stories, representing the number of floors in the Twin Towers. Registrants will receive a photo of one of the fallen heroes of September 11th. Climbers will have the option to start in full turn-out gear, just as their fire service brothers did that morning, or wear their work uniforms or gym clothes.

“The 9-11 Memorial Stair Climbs are a meaningful way to honor those heroes of September 11th,” said Chief Ronald J. Siarnicki, executive director of the NFFF. “We are very pleased to work with FDIC to bring the climb back for a second year.”

On September 11, 2011, the Foundation sponsored 35 climbs across the nation, raising more than $150,000 for the FDNY survivors. Similar climbs will occur around the country in 2012.
