RAE Systems Europe Provides Wireless and Portable WMD/HazMat Detection for the 2006 FIFA Football World Cup Games

SAN JOSE, Cal. and MUNICH, Germany - RAE Systems (AMEX: RAE), RAE Systems Europe assisted the Anti-terrorism Mission of the German Homeland Security Agencies by providing RAE Systems’ wireless and portable hazard detection systems solutions for the 2006 FIFA Football World Cup™ Germany Grand Opening Ceremony and Munich games.

In the new major stadium in Munich, immediately after the Grand Opening Ceremony on 9 June, the first game of the World Cup (Germany vs. Costa Rica) took place. All events and games in the city of Munich will be monitored by the Anti-terrorism Mission of the German Homeland Security Agency using wireless and portable hazard detection systems from RAE Systems – a detection and measurement capability that provides early detection of airborne toxic industrial chemicals (TICs) and weapons of mass destruction (WMD). The equipment delivers risk warning to the Homeland Security agencies both for the World Cup Stadium and for the city of Munich and the state of Bavaria.

“Protection through Detection” – the prime mission of all Chemical/Biological/Radiological/Nuclear/Explosive (CBRNE) security assets during the world tournament, is provided with the ATEX-approved, wireless multi-gas and PID sensor-equipped AreaRAE Responder system. The system is integrated in a wireless mesh network solution, which brings real-time, continuous multiple-sensor measurement and detection capabilities to the Emergency Operation Center.

The Munich Fire Department, one of the key players in the emergency response and disaster preparedness system, was able to deploy the systems within the high-security zones, after initial advice and training by RAE Systems representatives at the Munich Fire Training Academy.

For the first time in Europe, a decontamination site and a medical treatment site are being fully monitored and surveyed in accordance with the approved German response plan. The combined forward Emergency Operation Center was included into the AreaRAE Responder protection zone.

The scout-reconnaissance teams are equipped with the most advanced, portable PID technology available today: the ppbRAE Plus and MiniRAE 2000 instruments. These high-quality, efficient detectors are integrated into the wireless mesh network with RAELink 2-E modems, ensuring real-time, remote communication and transmission of measurement data.

All data is easily maintained and surveyed, and risk analysis conducted in real-time at the Emergency Operation Center.

For advanced protection at other major event sites within the city of 1.3 million people, plus the additional hundreds of thousands of international guests, MultiRAE Plus monitors from RAE Systems have been deployed to special squad teams around the municipality. Hazardous detection capabilities including CBRNE and TIC measurement methods were easily added to the first responder mission.

After the first few days, all systems and solutions have worked efficiently and security and protection are being handled effectively, as a spokesman from the Munich Fire Department stated. All detection devices will be maintained and stay operational until end of the football extravaganza.
