BURTCHVILLE TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Authorities say a fire has swept through a family’s Michigan home, killing a man and two young children he was trying to rescue. Neighbors were also trying to save them.

The sheriff’s department says 36-year-old Charles Buckland’s wife escaped from a second-floor window with help from a neighbor. A 12-year-old girl also escaped the fire early Tuesday at the home in St. Clair County’s Burtchville Township, about 60 miles northeast of Detroit.

Next-door-neighbor Christina Pringle brought a ladder to help the woman escape after hearing screams from the home.

The department said Buckland’s body was found in a bedroom where 4-year-old Joshua and an 8-month-old Emma had been sleeping.

The cause of the fire wasn’t immediately known.
