When you go back to the memory lane and remember those parties and celebrations do you remember one occasion which was celebrated without a cake? I am sure that every family, at least for once would have bakes these tasty stuff at home the history even records event of cake cutting at weddings as long back as 4000 years.
Do you know how it all began? Who invented the recipe of cake? Which country or community can claim cake as their original dish?
Some historians specializing in food and their origin believe that cake was first baked in eastern culture and then it came to west through Arab traders. Traditionally eastern cultures have been a great contributor of different kinds of sweets to the world. The Arabs were a very peculiar race. They were quick to adapt and spread their knowledge. Be it Indian numerical or Chinese cake. They also started the practice of lighting candles on cakes. Since they earned their livelihood from trade, they took their knowledge to Europe. Once in Europe, the cake suddenly found new admirers who were not afraid of experimenting with cakes and come out with new recipes. England, France and Italians, all contributed to the development of cake. They created unique recipes which are now famous all over the world.
The history of cake can be traced back to China. The Chinese invented lot of things. The list of inventions range from gunpowder to cake. In ancient Egypt, we find the mention of cakes and baked products. One can find how to bake a cake in the hieroglyphics.
Traditional stories coming down for generations also mention cakes baked during festive occasions. Yes, in those day we did not have well documented recipes like chocolate baking recipes, cake baking recipes, chocolate cookies recipes, chocolate cakes recipes, home chocolate recipes, healthy organic recipes, recipes for chocolate brownie, baked chocolate chip cookies, almond flour cookie, dairy free cake recipe, sugar free dessert, sugar free cakes. In those days, cakes existed in their simplest form but they did exist.
Pies and brownies were invented in South America. They denote the evolution of simple baked cake to new forms. Cakes, especially multi story cakes were an integral part of royalty celebrations in England. Now when we talk about cakes and brownies and pies, how can be contribution of Rome be forgotten? Romans were always fond of a hearty meal. The modern cake which we see today is first time baked in roman time. Romans created layering and used cream to top the cake. No roman wedding was complete without smearing the cake on the top of the head of newlyweds.
