NEW YORK — When you get Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano, Chief of Operations Robert Sweeney, Marvel Comics Editor Bill Rosemann, Hot Dog the FDNY Fire Safety Mascot, Captain America and Spider-Man behind a podium, you probably would not expect it to be about a serious topic.

But the group came together at Midtown Comics in Manhattan on April 5 to announce the release of a new Marvel comic book that’s all about fire safety.

“Captain America and Spider-Man are all about protecting us from the bad guys,” Commissioner Cassano said. “So it makes perfect sense for these superheroes to team up with our fire heroes to save lives through fire safety.”

The book features FDNY firefighters and Marvel superheroes battling both fire and villains as a team. And as the story progresses, they all share valuable lessons about fire safety.

The 10-page comic also features a cliffhanger ending, which sends the reader to the FDNY Foundation website, www.fdnyfoundation.org, to see the story’s resolution.

“Since the real heroes of New York are the firefighters, we knew we had to make this the best comic book ever,” Mr. Rosemann said. “This book is not only fun and entertaining, but you learn tips about how to keep you and your family safe if there’s a fire in your home.”

The books are free and available at FDNY Fire Safety Education events and the FDNY Fire Zone in Rockefeller Center, while supplies last.

And as the students from P.S. 51 Elias Howe cheered for the heroes, Captain America said, “We’re here to make sure all you kids know how to make your home fire safe.”

Spider-Man added: “I’m happy to be here today, as we continue to do all we can to make sure that people of New York are safe from fire and super-villains.”
