Stranded hiker rescued from Malibu Canyon ledge

MALIBU, Calif. — Authorities say it took hours to rescue a hiker unable to hear or speak after he became stranded on a ledge some 400 feet above the floor of Malibu Canyon.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy Guillermina Saldana says the rescue Wednesday was made more difficult because the 25-year-old man could not communicate the extent of his injuries to rescuers.

Saldana says sheriff and county fire rescuers were called to Malibu Canyon about 9 p.m. Tuesday when several hikers called for help.

She says rescuers cleared heavy brush at the top of the ledge, then lowered ropes to secure the man, who was precariously hanging on to brush.

The hiker was brought to safety at about 1 a.m. Wednesday and taken to a hospital with multiple cuts.
