The Eureka Fire Department benefited from a grant from the Department of Homeland Security recently, allowing for the purchase of a new thermal imaging camera and the training to learn how to use it properly.

The Eureka Fire Department said the cameras cost about $9,600 new.

“The T3MAX Thermal Imager is one of the newest generations of thermal imaging cameras currently available for fire department use,” stated an EFD press release. “The T3MAX uses a high definition, multi-color display screen to help rescuers quickly differentiate temperatures given off by victims, building components and fire.”

Eureka Fire Chief Eric Smith said the equipment purchase was made possible by the collective effort of members of his department and Congressman Mike Thompson.
