Cummins, Inc. revealed a new lightweight engine – 2,050 pounds to be exact – at FDIC.
The next-generation X12 engine has a 10- to 16-liter class and weighs 400 to 600 pounds less than other medium-bore engines. With less weight on the front axle, it enables flexibility in cab design.
The use of high-strength composite materials for the oil pan and valve cover contribute to weight savings. The X12 is available with ratings that range from 455 to 500 horsepower; it has a 1,695 pound-foot maximum torque maintained from 1,000 to 1,300 rpm. It comes with a standard five-year/100,000-mile full engine warranty. Extended coverage plans are available for up to eight years.
Full production of the OBD/GHC-compliant X12 will begin in 2018.
