Firefighter rescues 2 boys who fell through ice

The boys were treated for hypothermia at a hospital and later released; the firefighter suffered cuts and bruises in the rescue

DERRY, N.H. — A firefighter crawled across thin ice to rescue two 12-year-old boys who had fallen into the frigid water while playing hockey.

A 911 call from a man who heard the boys screaming caused firefighters en route to another call to be diverted to the scene, where they found one boy clinging to the ice and the second struggling to stay afloat, The Associated Press reported.

A firefighter attached to a rescue line, crawled across the ice and pulled the boys out. The remaining seven firefighters pulled the three back to shore.

The boys were treated for hypothermia at a hospital and later released. The firefighter suffered cuts and bruises when he became wedged between ice and it cut through the back of his ice rescue suit, according to the report.
