JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Eight people were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard yesterday after their motor boat ran aground on a sandbar near the Statue of Liberty and took on water, officials said.
The Jersey City Fire Department’s rescue boat Marine 1 responded to the mayday call at 5:29 p.m. from a 36-foot recreational boat that hit a sandbar in New York Bay between Liberty Island and Liberty State Park in Jersey City, said Fire Director Armando Roman.
Two Coast Guard rescue boats also responded from Coast Guard Station in Staten Island, Coast Guard spokesman David Schuhlein said.
Six of the people were taken to Staten Island and two others remained aboard a second Coast Guard rescue boat, Schuhlein said. No injuries were reported.
