Calif. training tower explosion injures several, lands recruit in hospital

The Long Beach Fire Department said the class was going through live fire training and the blast happened in the structure’s basement as operations began

LONG BEACH, Calif. — A Long Beach Fire Department recruit was hospitalized Tuesday after an unplanned explosion at the Fire Captain David Rosa Regional Training Center, CBS Los Angeles reported.

In addition, 11 people sustained minor injuries.

The department said on Twitter that the recruit class was going through live fire training and as operations began, the blast happened in the training tower’s basement. The explosion caused damage throughout the structure.

All personnel involved in the training were evacuated.

Department EMS providers transported the more significantly injured recruit to a hospital for further evaluation.

The training center has been closed, and recruit training was suspended for the day.

The incident is being investigated by local authorities.
