INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — One firefighter was injured as crews battled a stubborn apartment fire near Southport early Friday.
The blaze broke out just before 3 a.m. in the 100 block of South Road at a 3-story brick home that had been converted into five apartments, Indianapolis Fire Department officials said.
Witnesses reported large flames shooting through the roof of the home. Five residents, including the property owner escaped unharmed, IFD officials said.
Crews worked for nearly two hours to gain control of the flames. Five units were damaged and officials say the fire may have sparked in a bathroom. The home was a total loss with an estimated $400,000 in damages, IFD Lt. Larry Tracy said.
The injured firefighter was taken to IU Health Methodist hospital for dehydration and exhaustion, Tracy said.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
