GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP, Mich. — An open house will offer residents a chance to get their first look at the new Department of Public Works building and fire station in Grand Blanc Township.

The open house and ribbon cutting are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday, June 8, at the new facility, 5272 S. Dort Highway, to mark the completion of the project.

Officials broke ground on the $24 million project in mid-October 2024 to build a 60,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility.

Fire Station No. 1 was connected to the township’s main offices, located at 5371 S. Saginaw St., which presented safety challenges due to limited space.

The Department of Public Works had also outgrown its space in the township’s main office.

The planning process to build a new fire station and DPW building began in 2019, and it was originally stalled by the COVID-19 pandemic, township Supervisor Scott Bennett previously said.

“This facility will serve as a vital hub for safety, wellbeing and public service for Grand Blanc Township residents,” Bennett said. “It’ll house the teams, and the equipment needed to keep our residents safe and our township running smoothly for generations to come.”

The facility was built without raising taxes, Bennett said, as the township has been saving and planning to build a new facility for years.

Following a ribbon-cutting ceremony, residents, local officials, and community partners are invited to tour the building and meet with township staff to learn about how it’ll support firefighters, public works staff and the community.

Station design is no longer just about housing apparatus. It is about supporting the people who respond from it.
