COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Firefighters are attacking a house fire in an effort that has closed a busy intersection near downtown Colorado Springs.

The fire at 925 E. Uintah St., was reported just before 11 a.m. It was apparently sparked when a three-man crew was using a torch to thaw a frozen pipe in the basement of the single-story home. According to a fire department spokeswoman Lt. Stacy Billapondo, some insulation caught fire and the workers couldn’t put it out, so they got out of the house and called emergency crews.

The house, located at Custer Avenue, is being renovated.

At last report, the fire was mostly put out, but crews were working on hotspots and looking for hidden flames.

Fire commanders called for a second alarm and a city bus. Both were brought in because of the extreme cold. The extra crew is relieving firefighters who need a rest and the bus is parked on Custer Avenue for crews that need to come in from the cold.

Uintah Street closed between at Cedar Street and North Institute Street.
