NEWARK, N.J. — Dr. Harry R. Carter, a municipal fire protection consultant, author and lecturer, died Friday after an illness.
He retired in 1999 as a Suppression Division battalion commander with the Newark Fire Department and previously served in other roles there, according to FirefighterCloseCalls.com. Carter also served as fire chief and training officer of the Adelphia Fire Company in Howell Township, N.J., in addition to other positions.
Carter was a fellow of the United States of America Branch of the Institution of Fire Engineers, Great Britain and was past president of the branch. He also served as president of the International Society of Fire Service Instructors and as president of the New Jersey Association of Fire Districts.
Carter served as an adjunct faculty member at a number of community colleges in New Jersey and the National Fire Academy in Maryland. He lectured in many U.S. states and three Canadian provinces.
He wrote or co-authored 14 textbooks and wrote more than 2,500 articles for fire service publications.
