CAMBRIA TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Reading Firefighter Robert Louis Berger was killed in a tragic accident Saturday while operating a tractor on private property in the 2000 block of South Sand Lake Road.
The Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Office stated in a news release that deputies and rescue personnel were dispatched to the incident at 3:24 p.m. for a report of a victim pinned in a tractor.
An investigation determined Berger, an 11-year volunteer firefighter, was operating a New Holland tractor with a backhoe attachment and was digging a hole when he became pinned.
First responders administered CPR and first aid to no avail, the sheriff’s office said.
The incident remains under investigation.
The Hillsdale Township Fire Department, Montgomery Fire & Rescue, Reading Emergency Unit and the Hillsdale County Victim’s Services Unit assisted on scene.
Reading Community Fire Chief Bob Jepson said Monday morning that funeral arrangements are being made and a date/time will be announced on the department’s Facebook page.
