PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. — A veteran fire captain died Saturday after a dirt bike crash.
East Pierce Fire and Rescue Capt. Tim McCoy, 59, was transported to a local trauma center where he died of his injuries, reported KOMO News.
“Capt. McCoy had been an integral member of this department for many years,” Fire Chief Bud Backer said. “His loss touches each and everyone of us. He will be sorely missed.”
The 30-year veteran joined the department in 2000 and previously served with the Bonney Lake Fire Department. McCoy planned to retire in June.
“I think he was cut out to be a firefighter because he was so calm and caring,” Anna, McCoy’s wife, said in a press release. “Tim was definitely passionate in everything he did. He didn’t just want to be a firefighter — he wanted to be a great firefighter.”
McCoy’s family said he had been riding dirt bikes since he was a child, had a professional motocross license and competed in races.
McCoy leaves behind his wife, son and daughters.
