MOBILE, Ala. — Two firefighter-paramedics were awarded for their dedication to saving a patient that initially declined medical care.
FOX10 reported that Mobile Fire-Rescue firefighter-paramedics Tony Rutland and Jerome Roberts responded to a medical call about a patient who was having chest pain.
Rutland and Roberts assessed the patient, who refused any further treatment and did not want to be transported to a hospital.
The responders insisted that the patient accept medical care and succeeded in getting the patient into the ambulance after several minutes of convincing.
Shortly after, the patient went into cardiac arrest while being transported to the hospital.
Rutland and Roberts pulled over and performed CPR on the patient. Another nearby crew arrived and helped with the transport.
The patient was fully conscious and alert by the time they arrived at the hospital, and hospital staff members later said the patient was “doing great” and “would be just fine,” thanks to the responders’ efforts.
MFR Chief Mark Sealy presented Rutland and Roberts with the Life Saving Award for “personifying commitments to competence, compassion, and courage necessary to serve the citizens of Mobile,” according to a department Facebook post.
