FISHERS, Ind. — A firefighter who lost his leg in a motorcycle crash has returned to work.

Indy Star reported that Lt. Brandon Anderson, with the Fishers Fire Department, was riding his motorcycle to a Kentucky lake when a truck cut him off. Lt. Anderson flew onto the road and his bike fell down on top of him, crushing his right leg.

Instead of bleeding out, Lt. Anderson’s quick actions saved his life. He used his belt as a tourniquet while his friend, a police officer, grabbed a trauma kit from his motorcycle.

Lt. Anderson was in the hospital for a month and lost his leg. He went through rehab and walked for the first time in November. In June, he completed the firefighters’ physical agility test and passed without any modifications.

“We’ve all been put on paths in our lives,” Lt. Anderson said. “It’s up to us to handle them, to make choices along those paths.”

One year later, he is back at the fire station and has been recertified to perform all of his duties.

“I wasn’t going to give up without trying to come back,” Lt. Anderson said. “I knew that if I was provided the proper equipment, I would find a way to make it work, as long as I had something more than a stick and a door hinge that could get me there.”

“At the end of the day, he’s not a lieutenant with a prosthetic leg, he’s a lieutenant. End of story,” Lt. Anderson’s colleague, John Mehling, said. “He just has a little more style than the rest of us.”
