WASHINGTON — The D.C. firefighter who shared his mask with an elderly woman trapped on the third floor of a burning apartment building was released from the hospital Friday.
FOX5DC.com reported firefighter Danny Lovato walked out of the hospital with his wife, fellow firefighters and doctors by his side. Lovato suffered smoke inhalation when he shared his mask with 65-year-old Phyllis Terrell, who had been preparing to jump out of a third floor window before Lovato got to her.

“What I did wasn’t extraordinary,” Lovato said. “It’s what we have been trained to do. You may hear that it was extraordinary, but it’s not. My instinct was to help Phyllis. I knew I wasn’t going to be able to pull her over the railing because we were so high. I knew that it would risk both of our lives so I just gave her my air.”
Doctors did not provide an update on Terrell’s condition.
