HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Firefighters raised money for a young cancer survivor through an annual fundraiser.
Hattiesburg American reported that Harlie Williams, 8, was the recipient of the Hattiesburg Fire Department’s 2018 No Shave November fundraiser, which raised $1,400 for her family.
Williams was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma in 2017 after her parents found a tumor on her neck.
She underwent chemotherapy for nine months at the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and is now cancer free.
Lt. Jeff Morgan presented the check to the Williams family at the fire station as dozens of firefighters from stations across the city showed their support.
“They can use the money for whatever they want,” Morgan said.
Brandy, Harlie’s mother, said the family is grateful for the act of kindness.
”It means so much to us to know they are behind us,” she said.
The No Shave November fundraiser raises money by allowing firefighters to pay $30 to grow facial hair through the month of November, an opportunity that is not allowed the rest of the year.
Firefighter Jourdan Arnold, who has organized the fundraiser for the past four years, said around $20,000 has been raised through the program.
