HOUSTON — Firefighters made a surprise visit to an elderly woman on her birthday to cheer her up after a “rough year.”

ABC13 reported that a Houston Fire Department crew surprised Billy Duff, 92, by showing up on her birthday with flowers and balloons.

Firefighter Robert Hyatt said Duff recently lost her husband and was later robbed of some of his keepsakes when her home was broken into.

“She’s had a rough year, I mean, losing her husband of 70 years, I mean I can’t even imagine that loss and then some of his possessions getting taken from her memories, that’s just tough,” Hyatt said.

“They got some diamonds, but the main thing they got was a crucifix that belonged to my husband,” Duff said. “That’s the only thing that mattered but they’re the ones that will have to answer, not me.”

Duff credits good friends and her firefighter “angels” to keeping her young.

“They need to have their wings on, they keep them pinned down, but believe me they are wonderful,” Duff said. “I’m very blessed, I really am. It’s been a fabulous 92.”
