Photos show toll on firefighters battling Calif. wildfires

SEBASTOPOL, Calif. ― Images posted on Facebook show firefighters taking a much-needed break from battling the intense California wildfires.

FOX4 KC reported that the Sebastopol Fire Department posted images that show firefighters briefly relaxing on the ground with a rock as a pillow before getting back to work.

“We have slept off and on throughout the incident in engines, pickups, hose beds, etc.,” Rincon Valley Fire Protection District firefighter Fred Leuenberger said. “There have been few breaks, just enough to get home and check on family.”

Leuenberger posted a photo of his crew eating dinner someone donated at the fire station, just 200 yards away from the nearest wildfire.

“These firefighters have committed to this community,” he said on Instagram. “Despite devastating personal losses, they continue to work day after day with little to no rest.”
