SPARTANBURG, S.C. — A Spartanburg neighborhood will soon meet new residents moving into a home freshly renovated with the help of their local firefighters.

Spartanburg City firefighters are volunteering their time and supplies to helpremodel a foreclosed house on Moxton Street. It’s all a way to honor a disabled veteran through the Purple Heart Homes organization. The home was foreclosed on and donated by the bank. It’s the one Navy veteran Jimmie Lea and his wife, Teresa, chose.

They will pay a subsidized mortgage through Purple Heart Homes, and they will be responsible for upkeep just as any homeowner. Wounded in Vietnam, Lea has knee, back and other chronic illnesses. Kevin Landry, project manager for Purple Heart Homes, said the firefighters removed carpet and are working to make the floors easy for him to maneuver on. He said every home the nonprofit “flips” has different needs.
