MOTHERWELL, Scotland — Fire chiefs said today they were “appalled” after firefighters were attacked as they tackled a blaze in a block of multi-storey flats.
A bottle and a heavy glass ashtray were hurled at the crew from an upper storey of Dalziel Tower in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire.
The missiles narrowly missed the firefighters, who had been called to tackle a fire in a bin chute on the 17th floor, which they extinguished.
Police are investigating the incident which happened at around 9.45pm yesterday.
Deputy Area Commander Craig Shaw condemned the attack.
He said: “I am appalled that this incident has occurred. Firefighters have enough to contend with without being subjected to this type of mindless violence.”
“It was only by sheer luck that one or more of my firefighters was not seriously injured.”
