LAREDO, Texas — The Laredo Fire Department shared a word of advice in light of a recent bee attack reported in the community.
On Wednesday, Laredo Fire Department crews responded to a bee sting call at about 7 p.m. in the 2600 block of Price Street. An elderly couple was in the backyard watering plants when they got surrounded by bees, according to first responders.
Crews encountered an 89-year-old man and an 84-year-old woman on the ground being stung by bees. Each was stung at least 100 times, according to the fire department. Firefighters said they used foam to help stop the bees from stinging. The elderly couple was then taken to Laredo Medical Center.
Crews recommend the following when encountering bees:
- Be aware of your surroundings
- Wear light-colored, smooth-finished clothing.
- Don’t wear cologne or perfume.
- Wear clean clothing and bathe daily. Sweat may anger bees.
- Wear clothing to cover as much of the body as possible.
- Avoid flowering plants when possible.
- Remain calm and still if a single stinging insect is flying around. Swatting at an insect may cause it to sting.
- If you have a history of severe allergic reactions to insect bites or stings, consider carrying an epinephrine auto injector (EpiPen) and wear a medical identification bracelet or necklace stating the allergy.
