Reinforce your muscle memory

Time is a precious commodity on the rescue scene. Anything we can do to save time benefits the patient.

Tool knowledge is a great way to save time. We’ve all picked up a hydraulic tool, regardless if it is a spreader or cutter, and forgotten which way to open and close it. Compound the time it takes to open or close the tool and it adds time to the call.

The next time you pick up a tool, reinforce your muscle memory. For example, when using the Hurst hydraulic system, the thumb switch must be to the left to open any of the tools. “Left Out” will open the tool; “Right In” will close the tool. Say it out loud and repeat it deliberately. After repeating it a dozen times, your brain and hand will take over and it should become muscle memory, thus making you a better rescuer.
