When to transmit mayday messages

Due to the dynamics of fire operations, sound tactics do not always ensure a smooth operation. Members are sometimes placed into situations or recognize perilous conditions that require immediate communication to all operating personnel. Different conditions require different communication channels to get pertinent information to members on the fire ground. When life-threatening situations become apparent, a mayday message should be transmitted to all units on the scene, as well as the dispatcher, so that incoming units are kept informed.

Tip: Mayday messages should be transmitted in the following five instances:

1: Imminent collapse feared

2: Structural collapse occurred

3: Unconscious firefighter

4: An officer/member becomes aware that a member under their supervision is missing. Any member of the team/unit can transmit this message.

5: A firefighter becomes trapped or lost. Cancel the mayday once the life-threatening situation is alleviated or controlled. Always continue fighting the fire, and be disciplined in carrying out your assignment without being overwhelmed by emotion.
