The Enterprise
ABINGTON, Mass. — Firefighter Charles Whitman fastened his seatbelt, turned the ignition key and grabbed the steering wheel of the 20-ton ladder truck with both hands.
With the siren wailing, Whitman raced to the scene of a two-car crash, stopping at red lights, passing cars and trucks, and swerving to avoid hitting a dog and a bicycle rider.
Seconds later, he was at the crash scene.
