Colo. firefighters train for avalanche dangers

SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. — In 1996, an avalanche path above Interstate 70 near the Eisenhower Tunnel rumbled loose and sent snow crashing down onto the highway into the westbound lanes.

Even though no cars were fully buried in the debris pile, the slide is just one incident that shows the potentially dangerous situation firefighters could find themselves responding to in Summit County.

The avalanche on Stanley Mountain that swept two cars off Berthoud Pass three weeks ago only brought home the reality that much more, said snow safety expert and Lake Dillon Fire-Rescue fire inspector Dan Moroz.
