IRVING, Texas — A FedEx jet has a new purpose — on the ground.
The retired Boeing 727-200 has been donated to firefighters — at one of the world’s busiest airports —for hands-on training.
The plane is now part of the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport Department of Public Safety Fire Training Center. Last year, FedEX donated a plane to Lubbock firefighters.
The jet spent almost 15 years hauling packages.
The president of Dallas-based FedEx Kinko’s — Ken May — says the company is committed to the communities it serves.
The center, since opening in 1995, has trained more than 5,800 firefighters from 27 states and one dozen countries.
Federal and state agencies also send firefighters to the center.
FedEx this decade has donated 30 of its retired Boeing 727’s to various groups for education and training.
