KANAKAKEE, Ill. -- In the world of emergency personnel such as firefighters and paramedics, barriers to communication can mean the difference between life and death.
And with an ever-growing Hispanic/Latino population in Kankakee County, this danger continues to grow.
“It’s frustrating when you can’t communicate,” said Tami Walters, a Provena St. Mary’s Hospital paramedic. “I know that I have to help myself so I can help others. It’s critical that we learn at least some basics of the language.”
