Whenever using a hydrant to supply water, it is important to get the greatest amount of water possible. Hydrants will have either two 2.5-inch ports or three ports consisting of one 5-inch steamer port and two 2.5-inch outlets.
One big factor will be friction loss due to the type of piping used, bends in the system and restricted openings. Whenever possible, use the larger port for water supply and try to cut down on the number of appliances needed to make the connection. Avoid using a 2.5-inch to a 4- or 5-inch appliance — this will add considerable friction loss.
