Hawaii firefighters train via video

The Honolulu Advertiser

LIHU’E, Hawaii — The Kaua’i Fire Department has installed a $162,000 system that allows firefighters to watch live training by video while staffing their stations.

The system, part of a $5 million Rural Job Training Initiative Grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, involved the installation of video streaming equipment at all seven fire stations islandwide.

In the past, the department would have one battalion taking training while another was on duty at the fire station. One benefit is reduced overtime, said department training Capt. John Blalock.
