LEON COUNTY, Fla. — A new program designed with help from rural fire departments that includes online courses should have made training to become a volunteer firefighter easier than ever.
But after two years of use, the four-part system has been hard to coordinate because not enough volunteers have signed up. For instance, Woodville Volunteer Fire has not seen a new recruit become certified in two years.
“This is the southern edge of Leon County — a lot of working-class people,” said Woodville Volunteer Fire Chief Richard Meuth, whose position is unpaid. “People start the training and they become disinterested and walk away from it — and you can’t blame them because it’s not easy.”
