JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. — In an effort to combat the growing heroin problem in the region, the Johnson City fire department is the latest group to outfit its responders with a medication to counter overdoses.

Last week, the village fire department added Naloxone as another tool for its responders. Johnson City follows other area emergency response and police agencies that have begun carrying the medication.

“We’re planning on outfitting every piece of equipment we have with it,” said Lt. Bob Blakeslee of the Johnson City Fire Department. “The heroin problem ... it’s been here but kind of scattered until fairly recently.” The village department has six Naloxone kits. One will be placed in each one of the various response vehicles. The medication, administered via nasal spray, cost the fire department $31 per kit and was paid for out of the department’s budget.
