For fire departments across America April means spending one night serving up ice cream to raise money; this year will be different. Different because for the first time in five years there will be no 31-cent scoop night fundraiser.
For the past five Aprils, Baskin-Robbins has hosted a one-day fundraiser by sharing the proceeds from its ice cream sales with the fire service. Most of that donation went to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the National Volunteer Fire Council.
However, many fire departments also used the night as a “boot drive” to raise money to buy equipment.
This year, Baskin-Robbins will be donating money to Feeding America, a hunger-relief charity. A Baskin-Robbins spokesman would not say why the company made the switch.
In 2011, Baskin-Robbins donated $100,000 to NFFF. The company also gave $100,000 to NVFC’s junior firefighter program.
