KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The Comstock Township Fire Department is trying to recoup $43,000 from an insurer for ruined and damaged equipment.

Michigan State Police shelled out $65,000 on overtime to 65 officers from five different posts.

That doesn’t count what it cost to have investigators spend a month sifting through wreckage and deconstructing the crash in aninvestigation that just wrapped up. There may never be a comprehensive cost total compiled for the massive Jan. 9 pileup on I-94 in eastern Kalamazoo County that collected 193 cars and trucks, killing one person and injuring another 22, and prompted a two-day closure of the highway.
