NM firefighting equipment stolen from national preserve

The equipment was stolen while firefighters were battling a wildfire on the preserve last weekend

LOS ALAMOS — A reward is being offered for information on the theft of firefighting equipment from the Valles Caldera National Preserve last weekend.

Officials believe the equipment was taken while a land fire crew was battling the Big Hat Fire in the preserve.

Several storage units in a closed off area were broken into, where a utility vehicle, trailer, drip torches, fuel cells, gas cans, tools, pumps and generators and compressors were taken.

“The loss of this equipment will adversely impact interagency firefighting operations in northern New Mexico for the rest of the year,” the Park Service wrote in a statement.

Anyone with information is asked to call investigators at 888-653-0009; a $2,000 reward is being offered.
