TRENTON, N.J. — A fire captain was robbed at gunpoint while on a call Tuesday night.
Officials said the captain was not injured during the robbery.
Police are investigating the crime and say no arrests have been made, reported the New Jersey Online.
Fire crews were assisting on a medical call at a residence; after the crew left, they returned to retrieve medical gear left at the house. After no answer at the door, the fire captain returned to the truck to write a note. On his way back to the house, the captain was approached from behind by the suspect.
The suspect ordered the captain to empty his pockets while pointing a handgun at him.
Officials said a second man arrived on the scene and the suspect said, “This guy is not from my hood,” before they both fled on foot.
“The fire department is out there bettering the community, and these kinds of incidents hinder and deter our ability to help the community,” union president Steve Coltre said.
The Trenton Fire Department was scheduled to receive ballistic vests last year, but has not received them. Union members point to Tuesday’s incident as a reason they need the vests.
